The fight at the line of contact: what a drone assault really looks like, how far ground robots have scaled, and what happens when the human comes out of the loop.
The public picture of drone warfare is a first-person view clip ending in static. The people who run these systems describe something slower and more organisational: assaults that take a position and then fail for want of anyone to hold it, robot ground vehicles counted in the tens of thousands, and autonomy introduced faster than the targeting discipline to govern it.
These pieces cover the line of contact rather than the deep fight. What a drone assault actually looks like when it works and when it does not. How far Ukraine's unmanned ground vehicle programme has scaled and what it is meant to replace. And what happens on the Russian side when the human comes out of the loop and the machine picks the wrong target.
